Geishas and Geeks: Asian American Gender Roles
Presented by APAAM
Where: 616 Hamilton
When: 8-10pm

Why are Asian American men stereotyped as effeminate and weak? Why are Asian American women often portrayed as submissive and exotic? How can reclamations of Asian American "masculinity" become sexist and homophobic?

Through this intimate discussion, we seek to understand Asian American gender roles and stereotypes not, as stereotypes are sometimes argued for, "rooted in truth," but as socially constructed and markers of subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) racism against Asian American communities. Also, in challenging these gender roles, how can we create a culture and understanding of Asian American sexuality that respects all people's genders and sexual orientations?

Redefine: New York City Asian American Student Conference (NYCAASC)
AAA's annual Asian American regional student conference that registers over 400 attendees a year.
Where: Kimmel Center (60 Washington Square South), New York University
When: 9:30am - All Day

A joint effort between students at a number of New York City schools (Columbia, NYU, Hunter College, CUNY Baruch, Fordham, and more) the New York City Asian American Students Conference (NYCAASC) is an annual, one-day gathering of Asian American students from around NYC to meet, network, and learn from one another. Through a series of informative and entertaining speakers, workshops, and performances, NYCAASC works to encourage Asian American students to explore their identities and the issues that face our communities.

The theme of this year's conference is "Redefine." Through our conference, we hope to bring all our voices—new and old, heard and unheard—into dialogue with each other, while acknowledging the differences and conflicts that are rooted in divergent experiences and shape vast and rich histories. Over the course of the day, we plan to showcase the stories of Asian American artists, activists, professionals, scholars, and more. We invite you to join us in our celebration and struggle, so that we may not forget our responsibilities to each other, but empower each other to redefine our identities.
